Ionic Column Capital, Entablature and Base. Plate 6 of classical architecture. Ionic Temple on the Ilissus in Athens.

Reproduction of a copperplate-engraved architectural detail by James Basire. Originally published in London circa 1770. This is a classic architecture print, and looks great in a group of three with the Corinthian Column and the Relief Carving of a Capital.

James Basire (1730-1802) studied engraving with his father who was a London engraver of maps. Basire was then apprenticed to engraver Richard Dalton, and accompanied a patron to Rome in order to study the works of Raphael. After his return to London Basire acquired a reputation for fine engravings of portraits, architecture, and antiquarian scenes. Between 1760 and 1795 Basire was official engraver to the Society of Antiquaries, and was appointed engraver to the Royal Society in 1770, and was a well-respected teacher and engraving master.

Paper size 49 x 32cm (19.25 x 12.5 inches). This is a fine print with grey background, on thick paper - as a perfect companion to Piranesi Vases for a wonderful group of classical architecture.
We also have printed this group of three architectural details on a cream background.
